On the green road

One of the most intriguing aspects of hire has always been how closely companies can work with their customers to devise comprehensive solutions that extend beyond simply the supply of equipment.

Examples of this are being seen increasingly as businesses seek ways of lowering their carbon footprint. A recent blog post last week reported how a hirer had provided equipment to reduce noise and emissions on a railway project, and now news comes of Speedy helping a highways maintenance contractor, Carnell, by providing renewable fuel to cut CO2e (standing for carbon dioxide equivalent, a standard unit for measuring total carbon footprints).

The trial, on a central reserve barrier upgrade site on the M6 in Carlisle, involved the use of a biofuel called Green D+ HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil) to power lighting equipment and the site compound.

The scheme has used more than 4,300 litres of the renewable fuel since October, emitting just 0.15 tonnes of CO2e compared to the 11.1 tonnes expected from standard diesel. Speedy says this is equivalent to two average cars running for a year.

Carnell plans to use the fuel on other sites in future to protect air quality for nearby communities.

The blog has also reported how HVO can be used to power welfare cabins, generators and other equipment.
