Up to standard

Actions that hirers and users of mobile access towers need to take in the light of the new EN 1004-1:2020 regulations were discussed in a webinar organised yesterday by PASMA, the Prefabricated Access Suppliers’ and Manufacturers’ Association.

The event was held as part of the organisation’s Tower Week initiative highlighting safety and best practice running from 7-13 March.

Don Aers, PASMA’s technical director, explained that the new regulations supersede the 2004 version of EN 1004 and that there is a transition period until 30 November, by which time industry professionals should ensure compliance.

EN 1004-1:2020 applies to mobile, freestanding single-bay structures with four legs and having wheels, and designed for shorter duration tasks. Low-level products like podium steps area also included.

Changes include shorter permissible maximum distances between platforms and from the ground to the first platform. Don Aers said that this could mean some products in future might need to incorporate new or additional features for stability.

He said that hirers and users should check that their purchasing policies include guidance on selecting the right equipment. They should also ensure that any towers they already have are certified to the right standard and in good condition.

Guidance on the new standard is available here.
