Viking lands at Arvill

When a water company needed to transport personnel and materials across a challenging site near Saltcoats on the North Ayrshire coast, it turned to Airdrie-based Arvill Plant and Tool Hire for a solution.

The company quickly sourced a Yamaha Viking utility vehicle, and when I called managing director Arthur Shevill to talk about it, he was just returning from having delivered the machine to the site.

“The contractors are delighted with it,” he said. “They had already hired a wheeled all-terrain vehicle from us but prolonged rainfall had turned parts of the area into a swamp.

“They have 4km of mains water pipe to lay for a new housing estate. After their enquiry we did some research and bought the Viking. Its wheels can be replaced by four individual tracks for use on particularly challenging terrain. We can obviously fit the wheels back on for applications in drier conditions, maximising the unit’s hire potential.”

The Viking is designed to carry three people and a 1-tonne payload.
