Have you been Zapptized?

Zapptizer must be one of the real success stories to have emerged as the world adapted to the pandemic. The UK-made sanitising agent is the result of quick cooperation between three businesses to develop a solution to protect people and premises.

The product is supplied by Perthshire-based Paragon Protection Systems, known for its Zappshelter storage buildings, which decided to pivot its operation to serve additional markets in these challenging times.

“We could see Covid-19 looming in February,” managing director Craig Michel told me. “I had conversations with a local company that specialises in putting compounds in pressurised containers and another that manufactures biocides. By bringing them together we were able to develop Zapptizer by mid-March.”

The chemical formula had been in existence for some time and used in cleaning applications, but not in a pressurised spray format. Intensive tests were carried out to ensure it was effective against SARS-CoV-2 which causes Covid-19. The agent is alcohol-free and is designed for use in confined spaces like vehicle cabs as well as in work areas and on surfaces.

Zapptizer is available in 22-litre and 13.7-litre canisters, and a spray gun is supplied separately to provide a self-contained package. A 500ml aerosol spray version is also offered, as well as Zapptizer wipes in packs of 120 or 1,000.

It can be applied to touch surfaces such as door handles, controls, seats and in working environments. The biocide remains active until triggered by the virus and can be used as part of a regular cleaning regime.

“We want to keep people informed and protected in a straightforward way, with the solutions they need to sanitise their vehicles and premises, and to safeguard their personnel,” says Craig. “There’s a lot of hype and misinformation out there and we see ourselves as providing a service to keep people safe.

“Zapptizer is food-safe, pet-safe, environment-safe and is water-based, and the gas propellant is non-flammable. It has been used by plant and equipment hirers, offices, public transport operators, hairdressing salons, supermarkets, taxis, schools and universities.”

Craig believes that a testament to Zapptizer’s impact is that it has become a verb - a cleaning contractor recently told him that he had just ‘Zapptized’ a client’s premises. And as two more people have been recruited to work at Paragon’s headquarters at Inchcoonan, in rural Perthshire to cope with demand, even more Zapptizing will be taking place in the future.
