Steep challenge met

The Dorset town of Shaftesbury was originally a hilltop settlement and some properties in the area are built on or near steeply sloping ground.

Locally based independent Dorset Hire Services recently responded to a request from a landscape gardener who was working on a challenging renovation project.

A homeowner wanted to extend their usable garden area by carving out an embankment, levelling the ground and adding a retaining wall. However, an added complication was restricted access.

“When the contractor initially placed the hire for a Takeuchi micro excavator he did say it would need lifting over a hedge,” says Luke George, managing director of Dorset Hire Services.

“However, I visited the site beforehand and I realised it was quite a challenge because the hedge was very high and the garden on the other side rose up sharply to quite a height.”

Luke called on the services of another local hire business, Events Crew Ltd which supplies generators, barriers, lights and other equipment to the events industry and was able to provide a Hiab lorry to do the necessary lifting.
