My world changed on Friday 13 March. Although it had been carefully pre-planned. After 20 years as Editor of the industry’s leading tools, equipment and small plant hire magazine, I was ready for a change of direction.
I was going to focus on all things musical. I was looking forward to playing a new tune in my life, especially on my various guitars and my new ukulele.
However, 10 days later, our entire world went into lockdown. In a totally abrupt, unplanned manner.
In my long journalistic career, I’d never even heard of, let alone used, the word ‘furlough.’ Overnight, it was on everyone’s lips.
A month or so later, drive-through coronavirus mobile test centres were springing up around the country. Significantly, hire companies were supplying all the physical equipment to these NHS sites – welfare cabins, generators, lights, barriers and the like.
Many hirers and suppliers were responding to these urgent new challenges, and I was moved to pick up my notepad again, and start reporting on some of these crucial news stories.
Who knows what the ‘new normal’ will look like in the next few months? Until we have a much better idea of this outcome, I’ll be on the case to highlight as many of the best examples as possible of hirers and suppliers working together to help the NHS, and the wider economy, through this crisis.
To launch the blog with a flying start, I have already added no fewer than seven inaugural posts. These focus on two dedicated national hirers, two hard-working local independents and three key equipment suppliers.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on this blog. So, please keep in touch. And stay safe.
