MD’s adaptable approach

When I phoned Matt Dolan I was delighted to hear that his new hire business in Warrington is flourishing, despite the pandemic.

He only launched the appropriately named MD Tool Hire & Sales operation in January, but he and his hard-working team have maintained steady growth that has accelerated during the crisis.

“We initially furloughed the staff for their own safety, but it was so busy that they were back after three weeks, with full social distancing measures in place. We have a one-way system to manage the flow of people, and only one customer is allowed in the shop at a time.

“We’ve been supporting NHS contractors with equipment, such as barriers to control hosptal queues. People doing DIY and gardening tasks were contacting us for tools and machinery. We’ve bought more Weber compaction plates from HSC and they’re all out on hire. We’ve also been re-hiring mini diggers to complement our own and we’ll be buying more of them, too.

“The key is in being adaptable. You have to do things differently as the market changes. We’re offering Calor Gas which attracts more cash business. We also added a Stihl tool that takes a power brush for cleaning natural grass, which many people now have for their lawns. It’s proved really popular.

“You have to remain pro-active and positive. We’ve hardly stopped. I’ve even had my nephew helping out at the depot part-time.”
