Good communication between site personnel is an important element of Health & Safety, particularly in busy or noisy locations, and Speedy has found that a number of specialist fleet additions addressing this requirement have been proving popular.

The RealWear HMT-1 is a head-mounted device with integral speakers and digital microphones with noise cancellation and is designed for hands-free operation. Rajiv Sharma, National Technical Manager with Speedy Communications, said that the unit can be attached to safety helmets and bump caps, and can be used with safety glasses or corrective eyewear.

The device has a 16MP camera for taking pictures and video, as well as a high-resolution flip-out micro display that fits just below the user’s line of sight and is designed to view like a 7in tablet as required. Interestingly, it can also be operated via voice commands for applications like remote mentor video calling, document navigation, guided workflow and mobile forms.

Also available is the RealWear Navigator 500 headset which has a greater data storage capacity, more memory and a 48MP camera.

Rajiv added that equipment like this is proving increasingly popular amongst a wide range of users for efficiently undertaking machine repairs, bridge inspections, site setups and health and safety work. He used the RealWear Navigator 500 to take the above picture At the Speedy Expo event in Liverpool last year.

Another recent addition is the Sonis Comms communications headset for creating an autonomous private duplex communications network with full hearing protection up to 82dB. It is suitable for remote locations with no internet or mobile phone coverage, and up to 15 people can be connected.

Users can speak without waiting for transmissions to end and they do not have to lift the ear flaps to hear others. Audio feedback enables operators to hear their own speech over background noise, and the system has a range of up to 3km for meshed groups, with users able to travel up to 800m from the other nearest connected headset.
