Training to tackle hire challenges

The Scottish Plant Owners Association (SPOA) has teamed up with the Intelligent Dialogue training and personnel development consultancy to offer two courses designed to tackle specific challenges facing plant hire and tool hire companies.

Aimed at business owners and directors, the Overcoming Rental Business Challenges training starts on 5 September with an introductory Teams meeting to agree objectives, before a two-day programme on 7 and 8 November. Subsequent individual coaching sessions will enable participants to discuss how to implement the learnings within their businesses.

Topics will include: pricing and fair value, increasing revenue, managing costs, improving customer satisfaction. key performance indicators and the importance of holding relevant customer data.

The Hire Controller Training course is a one-day session taking place at the SPOA offices in Stirling on 13 September 2023, designed to help hire controllers win business and understand the commercial realities of the decisions they make.

Both courses are available to members and non-members.

Callum Mackintosh, SPOA President, said: “It is becoming increasingly apparent that members need additional support to navigate the current challenges they are facing. The reality is that costs are rising across the board and it is very easy to miscalculate the cost of doing business.

“There is more to negotiating contracts than price and it is our duty to ensure that we do our best to equip members with tools and skills to support them to run a sustainable and profitable business.”

Diane Banister, MD of Intelligent Dialogue, added: “We are delighted to be supporting plant hire owners in Scotland to overcome some of the challenges faced by businesses in the rental sector and I hope that SPOA members and non-members see the value in it and sign up.”

Diane, pictured below, describes hire controllers as “the unsung heroes. They make everything happen. The role is part customer service, part technical, part operational and part sales, and it is very commercial.

“The way customers do business now is quite different, so they have to operate across many channels. It’s vital that plant hire companies attract and retain hire controllers, and training has a huge part to play in that.”
