Top performance at Clements

Back in 1974 a first class stamp was 6p, the average house cost £9,927 and a pint of lager was a princely 20p. Also that year, Paul Dixon joined Coventry-based Clements Plant & Access Hire straight from school as an apprentice HGV mechanic.

After a remarkable 46 years of service, Paul has now been promoted from his current post as Works Manager to the newly created position of Operations Director.

“Paul is an invaluable member of the team,” says Managing Director Adrian Hutchinson. “We are very proud of this effort and his promotion is long overdue.”

Work ethic and commitment

Clements Chairman Jim Longstaff added, “In these uncertain times we have massively benefited from Paul’s work ethic and commitment.

“During the Covid-19 lockdown, he volunteered to drive an HGV as part of our skeleton team to keep our key clients going, which is testament to the man. His Directorship is richly deserved.”

Paul has also worked at Clements as a plant fitter and a mobile service engineer, becoming Works Manager in 2007. He is also a qualified HGV driver and a PAL-certified machine operator.

“No two days are the same”

“I love coming to work,” says Paul. “No two days are the same. I’ve seen huge changes over the years which you just take in your stride.

"I was blown away when Jim and Adrian invited me to be a Director and I hope that I can continue to repay their faith in me. I aim to carry on for as long as possible and hope to achieve 50-years with the business."

Paul’s promotion will allow Jim to step back from the day-to-day running of the business to look at new growth opportunities.

Jim also tells me that Clements has been performing remarkably well in these challenging times.

Record turnover

“Every month from March through to July we have seen very good levels of business, and June was actually our record month in terms of turnover. Our financial year ended in April and we were well above target, with the best turnover we’ve ever achieved.”
